Ho ho, good luck
A very traditional comic today, Shelley and Amy united. I’ve featured a lot of friendships in my comics, but this is my favourite.

Crazy-eyed Amy! “Mischievous” is a sadly insufficient word to describe her expression in panel 2.
It’s hard to pick between Shelley/Amy and Lottie/Shauna, personally.
“The music industry’s unshakeable moral code”? Oh, Shelley, you’re just so adorable when you’re being naive. 🙂
I’m a Mildred fan myself. Do I have to go sit in the hall?
I’ll bring yeh some biccies for while you wait. …Whoops, no, sorry. Can’t make it; I’m completely over to the west, in the Pacific Northwest.
Nah, Mildred is cool, too.
Mildred’s one of my favourites too but I have no more stories for her right now.
I disagree, Lottie will always be my favorite.
I love both friendships. I also love how Lottie/Shauna ended up becoming the respective protégés of Shelly/Amy.
Wait, isn’t Lottie Erin’s protĂ©gĂ©?
She’s Shelley’s intern in Murder She Writes and The Big Hiatus.
She’s been both, really. Lottie’s looked up to Shelley as a mentor figure going all the way back the the Dr. Ladysounds days and worked as Shelley’s “intern” in “The Big Hiatus”. And when Lottie offered her services to the Cormorant (in “The Case of the Severed Alliance”), her letter of recommendation was from her “mentor”, which, based on the wording, was obviously Shelley. But at the end of “Severed Alliance”, Erin also recruited Lottie to help her out as her unofficial “black ops” assistant.
So Lottie’s been a protege to both Winters sisters, though we’ve seen more of her with Shelley.
True, Erin too, except she was a far more reluctant mentor to Lottie.
Amy, I think, qualifies as a Cutie Patootie. Unfortunately, she’s the dangerous kind who doesn’t seem to hear The Ghost of a Ticking Time Bomb that I do. Good luck, Miss Amy, you’re on your own.
*Ping*
First true fact: I spent the entire night before my wedding burning CDs for our guests.
Second true fact: We forgot to give those CDs to our guests.
OK, ‘The unbreakable moral code of the music industry’ qualifies as the funniest sentence of 2019. With Trumps Twitter Account considered, this means something! And friendships in Johns Comics are so great because John Allison is a master of creating complete, believable characters. They are the reason we all stay with these comics: You care about them! Deeply.
aarrrrgh! typoed unbreakable instead of unshakeable!!!
I was also tickled by the “music industry’s unshakeable moral code”.
I also have to wonder who would fall for this “demo”. Did she grab albums where all the bands sounded the same? How much effort did she put in to make sure the bands sounded similar enough?
*similar enough to each other, not necessarily similar enough to the band she is managing.
There is surely no way this plan can backfire, Ame!
What could possibly go wrong go wrong go wrong go wrong …
Oh wow, were I a tattooed man, I would get the whole of panel 2 tattooed upon my body, with maybe a blank for “listened to their demo” only so that I could then sharpie in Amy and Shelley denouncing all of my endeavors forever.
I’m having a bit of a hard time reconciling Amy’s forceful character here with her pre-tats and dyed fringe age status. She wasn’t that complex a character before, IIRC.
I only found these characters through writing them, to write them exactly as they appeared in late 1998 would preclude them having almost any personality at all. The essence of this project is to retroactively apply the lessons learned and, more importantly, not care what anyone thinks about that.
“…and, more importantly, not care what anyone thinks about that.”
This is the secret.
Yeah – produce comics as if no one was looking at them is the only way to make something new. Same as dancing.
Excellent sense of humour + apathy = GENIUS, PURE GENIUS
(…Heh.)
Really? I seem to remember her announcing her retirement from City Limit after Len was fired via a Sharpie message *written on her buttcheeks*, as early as 1999 or so.
I actually see Amy’s brash-sexpot nature with a heart of gold as one of the best, most entertaining, and most constant parts of the Bobbinsverse.

She just burned the supreme selection of indies so indies they will never pick up…
Even if the music industry has no moral code this won’t end well at all :S
