John Allison, have I effusively complimented you lately on your talent as a storyteller? Because this is a tremendously satisfying turn in the tale, and I can’t even count the number of times I’ve felt that way in the twenty-plus years I’ve been reading your work. Thank you for being an outstanding writer and artist too.
I mean it was clear that there was some hidden agenda involved in Dorados dishing out stuff on his unsuspecting and perpetually broke tennant. But damned if I knew that! John Allison, you did it again. Damn.
No little red bubbles around Ryan and Ljubana’s heads, so they’ve sobered up, I guess.
BTW, I hereby nominate Ljubana for a place on the CHARACTERS page because I’ve reached the point where I remember almost nothing about what her deal is. 😉
I meant that I remember almost nothing about the details that have been established about her in THIS incarnation of “Bobbins” so far. I remember she’s from some other country than the UK and that she lives with her mother. That’s basically it.
Nearly a year later, but: I suspect Dorado contrives cruel exhibitions to induce his son to stand up to him, and, until now, Hugo has failed these tests.
Now I’m curious about Dorado’s “tape of sad songs that I like” and what that sounded like to set the appropriate atmosphere for nature to take its course.
Is Ljubana the reason Ryan later ended up with comrade bat?
Poor comrade bat.:(
Also, good job, John Allison. It makes me very happy to see Hugo getting some respect. Now, if he could only land himself a terrifying woman like Amy everything could end happily ever after.
I don’t think they got together until “Bad Machinery.” Fallon was with Ryan himself for a while during “Scary Go Round” — during at least part of which she considered Shelley her best friend — but that was well after the original “Bobbins” had ended.
And I think it was Natalie the French Woman Who Became a Ghost who played a role in Ryan acquiring Comrade Bat, and I know that Comrade Bat lived and died within the “Scary Go Round” era.
On a separate note: Where’s Claire? She worked at the magazine during this era too, right?
I know that ONE bat was found dead in his cage after Ryan had been held in an institution of some kind (where he met Desmond and some other guy) for a while and had thus not been able to go home to feed his pet. That was in “Scary Go Round.”
A few strips ago, someone in the comments mentioned the Big Night vibes they were getting from the restaurant story. If any doubt remained about that, this last panel puts them to rest – a lovely echo of a lovely end to a lovely film.
For real though, can someone explain it to me? I don’t quite understand what’s happened. Why is Dorado not a bad guy, why did he give Ryan all the food?
Ryan’s gonna be sporting some scratches in the morning!
This is somehow even more frightening than if he were acting out of greed or malice.
AT LAST!

I hope Ljubjana’s spirit animal isn’t the praying mantis.
Can there be any doubt?
I feel more Sheloba vibe from her.
I’m to sure who is disturbing me more; Ljubljana or Dorado.
“Not” sure

Ljubly.
I’m confused about exactly what Dorado originally set out to accomplish. And that’s okay.
Dorado = Heart of Gold, for once? Neat twist!
He is a good man. Harsh, but fair.

She’s only appeared once previous to the current run of Bobbins, so it would be a pretty thin entry:

Goes to night school with Amy, runs a rowdy night club.
Okay, thanks.
If Mr. Allison published an Official Handbook of Bobbinsverse Characters, I’d certainly buy it. 🙂

A most excellent twist, turn, and flip of the tale.
A hearty clapping of the hands for you, Mr. John Allison!

I don’t find Amy terrifying. Lottie is terrifying. Erin is terrifying. Not Amy.
Amy is, at most, 0.6 Ljubjanas on the “terrifying woman” scale.
Isn’t Hugo involved with Fallon these days? She is pretty terrifying.
I remember he was with the crochet queen for awhile.
Define “these days.” 🙂

Did Comrade Bat die? I missed that. I remember Friend Bat dying.
I thought they were one and the same. My bad. 😐
