The half you’ve chosen to wear
To do research for today’s comic, I looked at the outfits of Ally McBeal, season 1. Here’s what I am going to say: I don’t think they were office wear at all. Every ensemble was a huge jacket and a gams-out skirt that either stopped just south of the equator or was split up to Algeria. Wild.
NOTE: I’m afraid I make no apology for “were nut’s.”
So, I see you’re gunning to take over Squirrel Girl. I’m sure they could not do better.
I drew a variant cover for Squirrel Girl a couple of years ago… let me tell you, getting that nutty takes practice. I had to go on a saline drip afterwards.
Something something salted nuts.
I worked in an office during that era, but we were very casual. Very few women wore dresses or skirts ever—when we did it was a big deal. Many of us wore jeans at least part of the time. One woman wore shorts daily, even in the winter. (This was in Seattle, Washington, in the northwestern UNited States, where the climate is similar to England.)
I remember the same thing. If a woman wore a suit it was like the suits the female detectives on a cop show of the time. Ally McBeal is a crazy cartoon of the era.
Yes, exactly. And if anyone wore a suit there would be speculation that she might be going on a job interview after work!
The suits era is still going strong in American law today. Those skirts, however, would probably be frowned upon.
“Were nut’s” is actually referring to an obscure crypto-zoological phenomenon the “weresquirrel”. Weresquirrels are characterised not by their craving for squirrel flesh, but instead for an exaggerated, fanatical dedication to harvesting nuts. Such was the draw of the nut these “weresquirrels” were termed “the nut’s were”. It only takes a minor misreading to transpose this to “were nut’s”.
You beat me to it.
A girl with a short skirt and a looooooooonnng
jacket?
SOMEONE needs to apologize for ‘Were nut’s.’ That kind of thing sends me up a wall, frothing at the mouth.
Im s’orry!
I feel I have missed something. Did M. Allison make a spelling error that he then deleted? Where are the nut’s??????
It’s the picture in the background in the first panel. And I think it’s deliberate.
“Were-squirrels”? That’s a new one. Now the special squirrels that guard and worship the blood oaks of Romove. They like to build pine cone henges and have sharp teeth unlike normal squirrels. Black eyes that turn red when it is that-time-of-the-month. To feed these very special oaks. Some say they are the “eyes & ears” of the monster oak tree. The red dew these unnatural trees thirst for…and supposedly they have more animal in them than is normal. (They might even be aliens!)
They seem to be spreading its seeds all over the world. To a forest near you. There is a Mistletoe Society that is a cover. Because of the type of parasitic mistletoe that is on the monstrous trees. Cut them down at your own peril. Something about curses and moving trees and such.
